One of the unique geological phenomenons of the Negev desert are the Makhteshim (Hebrew for craters), a rare geological phenomena of only 6 specements world wide, the three larger of which located in the Negev (2 smaller ones in the Sinai desert).
The creation of a Makhtesh takes about 100 Million years and requires particular conditions along several stages.
The Hazera Makhtesh is the smallest of the three Makhteshim of the Negev, therefore allows the observer a good view of the typical round shape of a Makhtesh, with a single narrow draining stream.
The tour starst from the Rotem plateau, east of Dimona. It begines with a gentle climb to the south, up the Hazera ridge, to the rim of the Hazera crater (Machtesh).
From there back north, down to the cool pool of the Zafit spring. Then up the dry river bed of Wadi Zafit, back to the Rotem plateau.
The Start/End point of the tour is reachable by bus from Beer Sheva (reachable by train/bus from Tel Aviv).
