The Ramon Crater is a unique geological phenomena named Makhtesh, meaning crater in Hebrew. This huge basin was carved over millions of years ago, where a mountain used to stand.
The nature reserve here offers a paradise for geology and any outdoor enthusiasts. This proposed route is only one of many possibilities. The owners of ibike (www.ibike.co.il), the Mitspe Ramon Cycling center and hotel, will be happy to assist you with routes and bike rentals, in addition to many other local guides specializing in off road cycling.
Please note that the Ramon Crater is a nature reserve and you must always stay on the marked paths. Be sure to have a sufficient amount of water and a map.

Leave Mitspe Ramon on the red marked trail going along the north cliff of the crater. The path will take you to the Mahmal Accent, overlooking the whole Makhtesh. You can go down the Mahmal on a single track or continue further north and go down the Noah Accent.

Once inside the basin, follow the track marked black leading you through the colorful rocks to a turn off with a red marked track. Follow the red marking to Ein Saharonim, a fresh water spring at the ruins of a Nabatian Inn. Here, caravans used to stop for the night on their way to or from the port in Gaza or Alexandria.

From Ein Saharonim, follow the green marked track to the paved road crossing the crater. Cycle parallel to the road west until you reach a southbound black marked dirt road. The black marked track takes you through the dry river beds to the Ramon Accent, marked red.

Climb out of the basin (you may have to walk your bike at some parts) to the top of the hill where you will reach a plateau, south of Mitspe Ramon. The red marked dirt road takes you north, past the star observatory and the Har HaNegev field school, and back to town.
